binat bibi mosque (1454) – earliest known mosque surviving in dhaka


upon arrival of islam in region, turkish , afghan rulers reigned area 14th century until late 16th century. afghan fort (also known old fort of dhaka) built @ time later converted present-form of dhaka central jail in 1820 british. 17th-century historian, mirza nathan, described fort in book baharistan-i-ghaibi surrounded mud walls , largest , strongest in pre-mughal era .


in 1412 shah ali baghdadi, saint arrived in delhi , came dhaka became disciple of shah bahar of chistia order. tomb still @ mirpur on outskirts of dhaka.


binat bibi mosque built in 1454 @ narinda area of dhaka during reign of sultan of bengal, nasiruddin mahmud shah (r. 1435 – 1459). oldest brick structure still exists in city.


according inscription found near present-day central jail area, gate of naswallagali mosque renoveated in 1459 ad.



around 1550 portuguese historian, joão de barros, first inserted dhaka map in book décadas da Ásia (decades of asia).
