subdivisions

one recent classification recognised 297 species of clematis, not surprising taxonomists , gardeners subdivide genus. several classification systems exist.

magnus johnson divided clematis 19 sections, several subsections. christopher grey-wilson divided genus 9 subgenera (clematis, cheiropsis, flammula, archiclematis, campanella, atragene, tubulosae, pseudanemone, viorna), several sections , subsections within them. several of subdivisions consistent between these 2 systems; example, of grey-wilson s subgenera used sections johnson. alternatively, john howell defined twelve groups: evergreen, alpina, macropetala, montana, rockery, large-flowered, late large-flowered, herbaceous, viticella, texensis, orientalis, , late mixed groups. thorncroft clematis, published catalogue of 2000 8 subdivisions of clematis refined 2006 16, being armandii, atragene, cirrhosa, diversifolia, flammula, florida, forsteri, heracleifolia, integrifolia, montana, tangutica, texensis, viticella, large flowered, late large flowered , species. part gardening public can understand these groups , yet grouping system offers enough diversity divide clematis meaningful groups classification purposes. rhs published international clematis register , checklist 2002 acknowledges wim snoeijer of netherlands proposer of of these new groups , influenced thorncroft clematis in way subdivisions established.

many of popular garden forms cultivars belonging viticella section of subgenus flammula defined grey-wilson. these larger-flowered cultivars used within garden designs climb archways, pergolas, or wall-mounted trellises, or grow through companion plants. these forms have large 12–15 cm diameter upward-facing flowers , believed involve crosses of c. patens, c. lanuginosa, , c. viticella. early-season, large-flowering forms such nelly moser tend towards natural flowering habit of c. patens or c. lanuginosa while later-flowering forms such ×jackmanii nearer in habit c. viticella.
