Construction and description Sonestown Covered Bridge

the bridge deck made of wide boards laid perpendicular axis of bridge, 2 runners on top of deck run length of bridge. burr arches support bridge cruder in other 2 sullivan county covered bridges; not smooth continuous arcs, several straight segments joined @ angle . top of burr arch on south (downstream) side of bridge noticeably lower top of arch on north (upstream) side.


vertical boards cover sides , portals of bridge , painted red. bridge has small window in center of each side (it had no windows before 2013 restoration), , openings between eaves , siding run length of bridge on both sides. gable roof covered wooden shake shingles. sign listing vertical clearance 10 feet 0 inches (3.05 m) posted above each portal. bridge has no steel reinforcements.


attitudes towards covered bridges in sullivan county changed considerably in last half of 20th century. 2 of 5 bridges remained in 1954 were razed 1970, when pennsylvania department of transportation considered tearing down forksville bridge (but renovated because of historic nature , appeal tourists). hillsgrove covered bridge added nrhp in 1973, , 2 other bridges added in 1980. pennsylvania historical , museum commission requires approval renovation work on nrhp bridges in state, , forbids destruction of these bridges.
