on september 5, 2014 syngenta petitioned epa increase legal tolerance thiamethoxam residue in numerous crops. wants use thiamethoxam leaf spray, rather seed treatment, treat late midseason insect pests.


european union ban in 2013

in 2012, several peer reviewed independent studies published showing several neonicotinoids had undetected routes of exposure affecting bees including through dust, pollen, , nectar; sub-nanogram toxicity resulted in failure return hive without immediate lethality, primary symptom of colony collapse disorder; , showing environmental persistence in agricultural irrigation channels , soil. however, not earlier studies carried out before 2014 have found significant effects. these reports prompted formal peer review european food safety authority, stated in january 2013 neonicotinoids pose unacceptably high risk bees, , industry-sponsored science upon regulatory agencies claims of safety have relied on may flawed , contain several data gaps not considered. in april 2013, european union voted two-year restriction on neonicotinoid insecticides. ban restricts use of imidacloprid, clothianidin, , thiamethoxam on crops attract bees.
