the english formally established factories in dhaka in 1668. english traders in city in 1666 when tavernier visited. william hedges appointed first head of british east india company. arrived dhaka on 25 october 1681. after battle of buxar, per treaty of allahabad, east india company appointed imperial tax collector of province bengal-bihar-orissa mughal emperor. east india company still subject of mughal empire. east india company took complete control in 1793 when nizamat (mughal appointed governorship) abolished. city became known anglicised name, dacca. owing war, city s population shrank dramatically in short period of time. although important city in bengal province, dhaka remained smaller kolkata, served capital of british india fora long period of time. under british rule, many modern educational institutions, public works , townships developed. modern water supply system introduced in 1874 , electricity supply in 1878. dhaka cantonment established near city, serving base soldiers of british indian army. dhaka served strategic link frontier of northeastern states of tripura , assam.


charles d oyly collector of dhaka 1808 1811. made collection of painting folios of dhaka in antiquities of dacca. these paintings exhibited of ruins of dhaka mughal era. short historical account of paintings appended each book. james atkinson wrote these accounts, accompanied engravings done landseer. in 1835 dhaka college established english school civil surgeon dr. james taylor. got college status in 1841. local muslim , hindu students armenians , portuguese among first graduates.

under permanent settlement of bengal enactment charles cornwallis in 1793, company government , bengali zamindars agreed fix revenues raised land. result, dhaka nawab estate grew become largest zamindari in eastern bengal. founded kashmir origin merchant khwaja hafizullah kashmiri , nephew khwaja alimullah. french trading centre converted residence of dhaka nawabs in 1830. later constructed palace , named ahsan manzil. estate paid rs 320,964 per agreement company government in 1904. in 1952 estate abolished according east bengal estate acquisition , tenancy act.
