early life

blanche stuart scott born on april 8, 1884, in rochester, new york, belle , john scott (1838-1903). father successful businessman manufactured , sold patent medicine. scott became enthusiast of automobile. father bought car , drove city in time before there minimum age restrictions on driving. in 1900 family, still in rochester, lived @ 116 weld avenue. scott s family considered tomboy , sent finishing school.


automobile adventure

in 1910 scott became second woman, after alice huyler ramsey, drive automobile across united states , first driving westwards new york city san francisco, california. trip sponsored willys-overland company , car named lady overland . scott , passenger, woman reporter called gertrude buffington phillips, left new york on may 16, 1910, , reached san francisco on july 23, 1910. new york times wrote on may 17, 1910:



miss scott, miss phillips companion, starts on long trip object of demonstrating possibility of woman driving motor car across country , making necessary repairs en route. miss blanche stuart scott yesterday started in overland automobile on transcontinental journey end in san francisco.

the publicity surrounding automobile journey brought attention of jerome fanciulli , glenn curtiss agreed provide flying lessons in hammondsport, new york. woman receive instruction directly curtiss. fitted limiter on throttle of scott s airplane prevent gaining enough speed become airborne while practiced taxiing on own. on september 6 either limiter moved or gust of wind lifted biplane , flew altitude of forty feet before executing gentle landing. flight short , possibly unintentional scott credited birds of aviation first woman pilot , solo in airplane in united states, although bessica medlar raiche s flight on september 16 accredited first aeronautical society of america @ time.


scott subsequently became professional pilot. on october 24, 1910, made debut member of curtiss exhibition team @ air meet in fort wayne, indiana. first woman fly @ public event in america. exhibition flying earned nickname tomboy of air . became accomplished stunt pilot known flying upside down , performing death dives , diving altitude of 4000 feet , pulling 200 feet ground. in 1911 became first woman in america fly long distance when flew 60 miles non-stop mineola, new york. in 1912 scott contracted fly glenn martin , became first female test pilot when flew martin prototypes before final blueprints aircraft had been made. in 1913 joined ward exhibition team. retired flying in 1916 because bothered public s interest in air crashes , aviation industry allowed no opportunity women become mechanics or engineers.


scriptwriting , museum work

in 1930s scott worked scriptwriter rko, universal studios , warner brothers in california. wrote, produced , performed on radio shows aired in california , rochester. on september 6, 1948, scott became first american woman fly in jet when passenger in tf-80c piloted chuck yeager. knowing scott s history stunt pilot, yeager treated snap rolls , 14,000 foot dive. in 1954 scott began working united states air force museum, helping acquire aviation materials.


death , afterward

scott died on monday, january 12, 1970, @ genesee hospital in rochester, new york, @ age 84. cremated @ mount hope cemetery. grave @ rochester s riverside cemetery.


on december 30, 1980, united states postal service issued air mail stamp commemorating scott s achievements in aviation.
