on 2 february 2006, kolvenbach informed members of society of jesus intended step down in 2008, year turn 80. superior general elected life, kolvenbach second resign office.


the 35th general congregation of society of jesus convened on 5 january 2008 in rome. on 14 january accepted kolvenbach s resignation , elected adolfo nicolás successor.


kolvenbach died in beirut on 26 november 2016 , buried within grounds of collège notre dame de jamhour outside beirut.
