born illegitimate son of lieutenant colonel hon. edmund nugent (who son of robert nugent, 1st earl nugent) , ms fennings, nugent educated @ charterhouse school , royal military academy, woolwich.


he commissioned ensign in 39th regiment of foot on 5 july 1773 , posted gibraltar. transferred 7th regiment of foot @ new york promotion lieutenant in september 1777 , saw action @ battle of forts clinton , montgomery in october 1777 , took part in philadelphia campaign during american revolutionary war. continued serve in north america , became captain in 57th regiment of foot on 28 april 1778 , major in same regiment on 3 may 1782.

promoted lieutenant colonel in september 1783, nugent appointed commanding officer of 97th regiment of foot , returned england, in post-war cost reductions regiment disbanded , instead became commanding officer of 13th regiment of foot in 1787. became aide-de-camp brother-in-law, marquess of buckingham, serving lord lieutenant of ireland, in november 1787. on buckingham s departure ireland, nugent became commanding officer of 4th royal irish dragoon guards in 1789. nugent became member of parliament buckingham in 1790. exchanged coldstream guards company commander in october 1790 , served @ siege of valenciennes in may 1793, battle of lincelles in august 1793 , siege of dunkirk in august 1793 under duke of york during flanders campaign.

the war office recalled nugent supervise raising of buckinghamshire volunteers in march 1794. commanded regiment under sir ralph abercromby in actions of st. andria , thuyl on river waal , participated in disastrous retreat rhine. promoted major general on 1 may 1796, became captain of st mawes castle on 5 november 1796. went on commander of northern district of ireland in 1798, in post played important part in placating people of belfast during irish rebellion year, , became adjutant-general in ireland in august 1799. represented charleville in last irish house of commons before acts of union 1800.


later career

nugent became governor of jamaica in april 1801 promotion local lieutenant general on 29 may 1802. while serving there, strengthened fort spanish slave agent in jamaica, james castillo, had built in 1709 in harbour view. named fort nugent, fort guarded eastern entrance of city of kingston harbour, although remains there martello tower added after nugent s departure. promoted substantive rank of lieutenant general on 25 september 1803, nugent returned england in february 1806 , became commander of western district in england in august 1806. elected member of parliament (mp) aylesbury on 3 november 1806 , created baronet of waddesdon in county of buckinghamshire on 11 november 1806. bought westhorpe house in buckinghamshire in october 1808 , became commander of kent district in england in july 1809.


nugent stood down seat in parliament become commander-in-chief, india in january 1811 and, having been appointed knight of order of bath on 1 february 1813 , promoted full general on 4 june 1813, replaced commander-in-chief lord moira in october 1813. nugent relegated role of commander of bengal army instead chose return england in october 1814. on return unleashed skin-full of venom against lord moira in turn complained prince regent nugent s hostile behaviour. advanced knight grand cross of order of bath on 2 january 1815 and, having been elected member of parliament buckingham again in july 1818, awarded honorary dcl university of oxford in 1819. retired parliament in 1832.


nugent served honorary colonel of 85th (bucks volunteers) regiment of foot, honorary colonel of 62nd regiment of foot , later honorary colonel of 6th regiment of foot. promoted field marshal on 9 november 1846, died @ westhorpe house on 11 march 1849 , buried @ st john baptist church in little marlow.
