a strong jet stream moved northeast across great plains region , strong surface low in western kansas strengthened moved nebraska-south dakota border. ahead of low, warm , moist air spread throughout south central united states nebraska, eastern sections of south dakota , upper mississippi valley. combination of strong winds , warm , moist air created conditions favorable strong thunderstorms. on june 5, high risk of severe weather issued 6 different states in midwestern united states, moderate risk area surrounding high risk area. forecasters had warned of potentially historic outbreak, computer forecasting models june 5 resembled on june 8, 1974, when 39 tornadoes struck southern great plains , killed 22 people. wichita state university canceled evening classes because of weather predictions. severe weather began developing across eastern colorado , northwestern kansas during morning , afternoon, producing several weak tornadoes in process. ef1 tornado impacted campground near kellogg, iowa , injured 2 people. despite extremely favorable conditions, severe weather day limited , tornadoes caused minimal damage.
