ny 283 assigned part of 1930 renumbering of state highways in new york, extending pennsylvania state line southwest of village of nichols ny 17 in village of owego. route served village of nichols, through overlapped ny 282. although signed state route, parts of ny 283 did not overlap ny 282 locally maintained. on january 1, 1949, ny 283 truncated begin @ east end of overlap ny 282 in nichols. remaining route nichols owego split 2 segments in late 1960s part of southern tier expressway s construction. 2 miles (3.2 km) west of owego, ny 283 ran along narrow 4,000-foot (1,200 m) strip of land between susquehanna river north , steep hill south. section of ny 283 abandoned allow linear strip used expressway s right of way. result, ny 283 designation removed on january 1, 1970.


most of ny 283 s former routing maintained tioga county part of several county routes. pennsylvania state line ny 282 in nichols, old ny 283 cr 4. after brief state-maintained stretch part of ny 282, former routing of ny 283 continues cr 6 dead end road dismantled southern tier expressway. old route resumes 1 mile (1.6 km) east town-maintained section of east river drive, feeds cr 25 @ east end. cr 25 picks once ny 283 , follows village of owego, connecting ny 17 exit 64. @ point, road becomes state-maintained again part of ny 96, uses old ny 283 reach ny 434 , susquehanna river bridge leading center of village.
