military service

in 1943, joined royal air force volunteer reserve, , serving until 1946. posted south africa trained , qualified pilot. reached rank of flight sergeant while serving other ranks. on 11 february 1945, commissioned royal air force volunteer reserve pilot officer on probation. on 11 august 1945, promoted flying officer (war substantive).

from 1950 1956, served british army. on 20 november 1950, joined royal regiment of artillery, territorial army second lieutenant seniority 18 march 1947. later promoted lieutenant, dated 20 november 1950. on 21 march 1952, promoted captain. on 16 october 1956, transferred territorial army reserve of officers, thereby ending military service.

legal career

porter called bar of northern ireland in 1950. during years practising barrister, part-time lecturer in law @ queen s university belfast. appointed queen s counsel in 1965. 1978 until 1995 porter judge of county courts.

political career

he active in ulster unionist party (uup) before election. in 1966 elected parliament of northern ireland representing queen s university. in january 1969 served parliamentary secretary ministry of home affairs, after appointed minister of health , social services. in march became minister of home affairs , appointed privy council of northern ireland.

within cabinet regarded moderate , declared broadening of local government franchise called nationalists inevitable.

porter s seat abolished northern ireland general election, 1969, able win new lagan valley seat. resigned minister of home affairs in august 1970. claimed have resigned due ill health, later complained had not been consulted imposition of military curfew on falls road in july. resigned uup in june 1972 join alliance party of northern ireland.
