raj began architectural career in ceylon working firm panditaratna & adithya on kalutara bodhiya temple prior attending architecture school. worked geoffrey bawa riba on triton hotel, valentine gunasekara riba on tangalle bay hotel , catholic chapel @ tewatte, , justin samarasekera riba on various projects throughout county 1966-71.

after graduating university of ceylon in 1971 raj moved hong kong , worked jon prescott riba on plans macau new town , renovations historic teatro dom pedro v. raj worked n-e metropolitan regional hospital board on york district general hospital in uk in 1972. joined llewelyn-davies associates in 1973 whom worked on military hospital in baghdad, doha hotel in qatar, , manama conference center in bahrein.

moving kansas city in 1974, raj worked on hyatt regency hotel patty berkebile nelson associates, menninger foundation sanatorium in topeka kiene & bradley associates, , on rogers new town in arkansas seligson associates.

as senior designer @ barrett daffin , carlin in tallahassee, florida, designed suwannee river water management district hq building in 1979.

in 1981 raj founded barr-kumar architects engineers pc , barr group international, llc, commercial , residential architecture , engineering firms based in washington, d.c.

educator

raj s career educator began @ university of kansas in 1975 served assistant professor until 1979. served director , tenured associate professor of florida architecture center in washington, d.c. 1979-84.

raj served associate professor in school of architecture , urban planning @ howard university 1986–94, , named emens distinguished visiting professor @ ball state university in 1998. joined faculty @ catholic university of america in 2003 , introduced first course in sustainability. raj served professor of practice in school of architecture & planning 2007-12.

advocate & volunteer

throughout career both practitioner , educator raj has attempted publicly champion principles of sustainable design innovative approaches addressing social problems including homelessness.

in 1996, raj nationally elected serve 1997 president of american institute of architects (aia) , became first person of color lead organization in 140-year history.

during tenure, raj pioneered annual aia legacy project @ organization s national convention in new orleans. called every aia national convention leave improvements built environment of host city. first legacy project, $11.5 million, 117,000 sf facility new orleans s homeless called, model of cooperation , achievement. project has been replicated in every host city since 1997, improving schools, community centers, housing, , hospitals.
