scene: opera set on isle of mona (anglesey).


act 1

scene: moonlight, grove of oak trees through troubled sea can seen in distance; rocks on either side


the roman general messala , troops have come track down british king arvire , bring him captive emperor claudius in rome. princes irvin , vellinus enter , tell romans search in vain: in hiding place on mona, arvire can never caught. messala replies arvire might taken cunning , asks princes him: mother, queen Élfrida, has become ally of rome. vellinus agrees betray arvire, although irvin outraged @ brother s behaviour. brothers leave druids arrive perform sacred ritual. modred, chief druid, says must can protect arvire romans. arvire enters, accompanied daughter Évélina. arvire in despair: after defeat in battle, romans captured wife. of druids bring in irvin , vellinus, whom have found lurking nearby. vellinus says have come news mother, queen of lenox, wants aid arvire against romans. must bring arvire them lead army. vellinus claims himself has fought romans , freed arvire s wife. arvire delighted , eagerly leaves vellinus.


act 2

scene: magic grotto intended druids sacred rites


modred , druids perform ritual allows them see future: vision have evil. act 3

scene: site, high rocks in background, grove altar left, underground chamber right


arvire eager fight in person, druids dissuade him , hide him in underground chamber instead. roman army, led messala , vellinus, arrives in search of arvire. vellinus worried brother; irvin may have betrayed plot. roman soldiers bring news being overwhelmed british counterattack led irvin. messala rushes off lead defence, leaving vellinus search arvire. vellinus beginning regret part in plot. hears noises underground , tells roman soldiers ready ambush. Évélina enters bards , prays @ altar father s safety. suddenly, vellinus , roman soldiers emerge trees , capture them. messala tells vellinus keep close guard on Évélina , take away mona. there fierce battle between messala s romans , irvin s britons. modred announces british victory arvire , irvin enters messala in chains. when messala tells them Évélina has been taken captive, arvire , irvin plunged despair, vellinus arrives soldiers; has had change of heart , releases Évélina. arvire magnanimously decides free romans , messala responds promising free arvire s wife , make alliance between rome , arvire. opera ends arvire promising Évélina s hand in marriage irvin.
