the 1966 race had dan gurney leading @ last lap, when engine of shelby american ford gt40 mk ii seized near end. gurney pushed car on finish line, beaten ken miles , lloyd ruby. however, actions determined against rules , did not receive credit finish.


in 2005, chevrolet corvette c6.r , aston martin dbr9 made race debut in hotly contested gt1 class, aston martin winning class first time in 49 years @ sebring ahead of 2 corvettes. corvette had dominated class past 3 years previous generation c5r.


the all-new audi r10 tdi won 2006 edition of race, car s first ever run in competition. victory set stage more momentous win r10 in next race, le mans 24 hours later in year. much-hyped porsche rs spyder campaigned penske racing dropped take 2nd place in lmp2 class, behind intersport lola car. gt1 corvette c6r team got revenge against aston martin, although second corvette came within 1/3 of second of podium in closing laps of race.


2007 saw audi again winning in r10 tdi despite requiring more frequent refueling due changes in american le mans series rules intended field between gasoline , diesel powered engines. in addition overall win, audi set track record in 2007 marco werner behind wheel in qualifying.
