Siege of Duncannon Laurence Esmonde, 1st Baron Esmonde



after outbreak of english civil war seems have tried maintain neutral position between king charles , english parliament; 1646 suspicions of irish confederacy loyalty had been aroused fact many of officers , soldiers roundheads , had broken cessation (the truce had been signed between king , irish confederates). advised james butler, 1st duke of ormonde have care of fort of duncannon. ormonde unable or unwilling interfere, confederates further alarmed defection of lord inchiquin side of parliament. on orders of confederacy, general preston began siege of duncannon in january 1646. place extremely decayed age ; though governor (esmonde) old , unable act in exigence, defendants behaved exceeding well.


the death of esmond s second-in-command, captain lorcan, however, discouraged them held parley, and, without consulting esmonde, surrendered fort on st. patrick s day. next day, relief force english parliament appeared in river, finding place in enemy hands, sailed away. esmonde, surviving surrender of duncannon 2 months, died @ adamstown, , buried @ lymbricke in church had himself built.
