a junior lions day @ den in 1988.


millwall began life on isle of dogs , inhabited 4 different grounds in club s first 25 years. first home piece of waste ground called glengall road, stayed 1 year. 1886 1890 played behind lord nelson pub on east ferry road, known lord nelson ground, before being forced leave landlady, received better offer use.


they moved third home, athletic grounds, on 6 september 1890. first purpose-built ground, grandstand seated 600 people , overall capacity of between 10,000 , 15,000. club forced move on again though, time millwall dock company wanted use timberyard. relocated in 1901 location near second home, became known north greenwich. remained east london club further 9 years, last game played on isle of dogs on 8 october 1910 against portsmouth, millwall won 3–1.


on 22 october 1910, millwall crossed river south london, moving cold blow lane in new cross. fifth ground called den, built @ cost of £10,000 noted football ground architect archibald leitch. first game played there against brighton & hove albion, brighton won 1–0. millwall remained there 83 years, until moving sixth , current ground, @ first known new den called den, on 4 august 1993. ground has all-seated capacity of 20,146. sporting lisbon team, managed bobby robson helped open ground playing friendly, lions lost 2–1.

bermondsey redevelopment controversy

in september 2016 lewisham council approved compulsory purchase order (cpo) of land surrounding den rented millwall, part of major redevelopment of new bermondsey area. plans controversial because developer, renewal, controlled offshore companies unclear ownership, , seen club , local community profiteering demolishing existing homes , businesses millwall s car-park , millwall community trust facility build 2,400 new private homes, no social housing. club contemplated possibility of having relocate kent. millwall had submitted own plans regeneration centred around club itself, council voted in favour of renewal s plans.


in december 2016 private eye reported how renewal had been founded former lewisham council leader , senior officer, suggesting potential bias, , decision approve renewal s plans may have been made far 2013 despite fact no due diligence had been able carried out pricewaterhousecoopers due poor , limited access information , management @ renewal, controlled isle of man , british virgin islands.


in face of mounting community opposition , media scrutiny, council said in january 2017 not proceed cpo. however, later reported taking legal advice regarding other avenues of securing cpo, , council cabinet members decide how proceed after review . private eye reported millwall continuing explore relocation options in kent.


traditional songs

a tradition @ den playing of official club song let em come , roy green, millwall , opposing team walk onto pitch. written club , lyrics represent old london culture, such eating jellied eels , having glass of beer before going game. song ends home fans standing, arms raised (usually in direction of travelling fans singing last line, let em all... come down.... den! television drama millwall supporter , ex-docker, starring david jason, featured lyric song in title, come rain come shine. song played on repeat @ wembley stadium after millwall gained promotion championship in 2010. song shoeshine boy mills blue rhythm band played entrance song before let em come .


other songs have been regularly played @ den on years in build-up game include london calling clash, no surrender bruce springsteen, town called malice jam , house of fun madness, features lyric welcome lion s den... . status quo s cover version of rockin on world played after every home win.
