the serbs had taken active part in wars fought in balkans against ottoman empire, , organized uprisings. because of this, suffered persecution , territories devastated. major migrations serbia habsburg territory ensued.


in 1594, serbs in banat rose against ottomans. rebels had, in character of holy war, carried war flags icon of saint sava. after suppressing uprising, ottomans publicly incinerated relics of saint sava @ vračar plateau on april 27, 1595. incineration of sava s relics provoked serbs, , empowered serb liberation movement. 1596, center of anti-ottoman activity in herzegovina tvrdoš monastery in trebinje. uprising broke out in 1596, rebels defeated @ field of gacko in 1597, , forced capitulate due lack of foreign support.
