cerebral palsy-international sports , recreation association defined class in january 2005 as, athetoid or ataxic - moderate involvement athlete ambulates without assistive devices. athetosis prevalent factor, although ambulant spastic quadriplegics (i.e. more arm involvement in ambulant diplegics), may fit class. athetosis means unsteady (writhing), not having capability remain still. 4 limbs show functional involvement in sports movements. class 6 athletes have more control problems in upper limbs class 5 athletes, although former have better function in lower limbs particularly when running. lower extremities-function can vary considerably depending on sports skill involved, poor, laboured, slow walking running gait, shows better mechanics. there can marked contrast between walking athetoid inco-ordinated gait , smooth paced co-ordinated running/cycling action. cyclical movements better performed cycling, running , free-style swimming balance-may have dynamic balance compared static balance. spasticity common in class 6 athletes , should not reason placement in class 5. upper extremities , hand control-grasp , release can affected when throwing in moderate severe athetoid athlete. more spasticity present greater limits on follow through , maintenance of balance after throwing.
