in december 1886 old jail @ ararat proclaimed j ward of ararat asylum. cater persons detained in jail, reformatory or industrial school or other place of confinement appeared insane. ward not separate institution in own right , has continued function division of ararat mental hospital. j ward regarded temporary measure.


a new institution built @ sunbury retention of criminally insane. however, when building nearing completion decided house females , males remain @ j ward . in may 1988 minister health announced j ward closed on next year.
