history

several archaeological sites around city date iron age, hellenistic, roman, , islamic periods.


mamluk period

in 1265 c.e. (663 h.), after baybars won territory crusaders, revenues umm al-fahm given mamluk na ib al-saltana (viceroy) of syria, jamal al-din al-najibi.


ottoman period

in 1517 village incorporated ottoman empire rest of palestine, , in 1596 appeared in tax registers being in nahiya of sara of liwa of lajjun. had population of 24 households, muslim, , paid taxes on wheat, barley, summer crops, olive trees, occasional revenues, goats and/or beehives, , press olive oil or grape syrup.


in 1838, edward robinson noted umm al-fahm on travels, while french explorer victor guérin found in 1870 had eighteen hundred inhabitants , surrounded beautiful gardens.


in 1883, palestine exploration fund s survey of western palestine described umm al-fahm having around 500 inhabitants, of 80 people christians. place well-built of stone, , villagers described being rich in cattle, goats , horses. important place in area besides jenin. village divided 4 quarters, el jebarin, el mahamin, el mejahineh, , el akbariyeh, each quarter having own sheikh. maqam sheikh iskander noted on hill above.


british mandate era

in 1922 census of palestine, conducted british mandate authorities, umm al-fahm had population of 2,191; 2,183 muslims , 8 christians, increasing in 1931 census 2443; 2427 muslim , 16 christians, in 488 inhabited houses.


umm al-fahm birthplace of palestinian arab rebel leader yusuf hamdan. died in umm al-fahm during firefight british troops.


in 1945 population counted other arab villages wadi ara region, first 2 of today part of umm al-fahm, namely aqqada, ein ibrahim, khirbat el buweishat, al-murtafi a, lajjun, mu awiya, musheirifa , musmus. total population 5,490; 5,430 muslims , 60 christians, 77,242 dunams of land, according official land , population survey. 4332 dunams used plantations , irrigable land, 44,586 dunams cereals, while 128 dunams built-up (urban) land.

in 1948, there 4,500 inhabitants, farmers, in umm al-fahm area. after 1948 arab–israeli war, lausanne conference of 1949 awarded entire little triangle israel, wanted security purposes. on 20 may 1949, city s leader signed oath of allegiance state of israel. following absorption israel, town s population grew rapidly (see box). 1960, umm al-fahm given local council status israeli government. between 1965 , 1985, governed elected councils. in 1985, umm al-fahm granted official city status.


in october 2010, group of 30 right-wing activists led supporters of banned kach movement clashed protesters in umm al-fahm. many policemen , protesters injured in fray.
