the ganz works identified significance of induction motors , synchronous motors commissioned kálmán kandó (1869–1931) develop it. in 1894, hungarian engineer kálmán kandó developed high-voltage three-phase ac motors , generators electric locomotives. first-ever electric rail vehicle manufactured ganz works 6 hp pit locomotive direct current traction system. first ganz made asynchronous rail vehicles (altogether 2 pieces) supplied in 1898 Évian-les-bains (france) 37 hp asynchronous traction system. ganz works won tender of electrification of railway of valtellina railways in italy in 1897. under management , on base of plans of kálmán kandó, 3 phase electric traction (two upper wires + rails) of feed 3 kv , 15 hz – produced different power station – realised thirty years 1902. italian railways first in world introduce electric traction entire length of main line rather short stretch. 106 km valtellina line opened on 4 september 1902, designed kandó , team ganz works. electrical system three-phase @ 3 kv 15 hz. voltage higher used earlier , required new designs electric motors , switching devices. three-phase two-wire system used on several railways in northern italy , became known italian system . kandó invited in 1905 undertake management of società italiana westinghouse , led development of several italian electric locomotives. in 1918, kandó invented , developed rotary phase converter, enabling electric locomotives use three-phase motors whilst supplied via single overhead wire, carrying simple industrial frequency (50 hz) single phase ac of high voltage national networks.

after world war i, in frames of ganz works, kálmán kandó constructed one-phase railway electric system of 16 kv , 50 hz incipient on world. main attribute feed normal network, additional power station became unnecessary. consequently, hungarian electric traction formed according country s energy management. kálmán kandó adapted speed-torque curve electric traction through changing phase number , pole number. kálmán kandó incorporated phase shifter in locomotives governed speed levels.


because of death of kálmán kandó, lászló verebély continued work hungarian railways (mÁv). moreover, managed construction of nationwide power station (bánhida) supplying railways budapest electric power transmission line of 110 kv. elaborated first plans of nationwide cooperation of electric energy. in 1930s organised department of electric stations , railways of bmge, became professor of significant branch of heavy current engineering.


in 1959 ganz merged mÁvag company , renamed ganz-mÁvag.


in 1976 ganz-mávag supplied ten 1,435 mm (4 ft 8 ⁄2 in) standard gauge 3-car diesel trainset hellenic railways organisation (ose), designated class aa-91 , 4 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 ⁄8 in) metre gauge 4-car trainsets, designated class a-6451. in 1981/82 ganz-mávag supplied ose 11 b-b diesel-hydraulic dhm7-9 locomotives, designated class a-251. finally, in 1983, ose bought eleven 3-car metric gauge trainsets, designated class a-6461. these locomotives , trainsets have been withdrawn exception of 1 standard , 1 metric gauge trainset.


in 1982/83 ganz-mávag supplied order electric multiple units new zealand railways corporation wellington suburban services. order made in 1979, , 44 powered units , 44 trailer units, see new zealand em class electric multiple unit.
