peters joined arizona department of transportation in 1985, , appointed gov. jane dee hull serve director in 1998.


after george w. bush took office president in 2001, peters left washington work administrator of federal highway administration. worked in capacity until 2005.


in 2006, president bush appointed peters co-vice chairwoman of national surface transportation policy , revenue study commission. resigned post of secretary of transportation in anticipation of in-coming obama administration. succeeded ray lahood, 16th u.s. secretary of transportation on thursday, january 22, 2009.
