in course of medieval conversion of pomerania , german ostsiedlung, prince wizlaw granted central parts of woods covering mainland section of principality of rügen, danish, cistercian monks camp abbey in lower saxony build neuenkamp abbey on 8 november 1231. monks erected church that, length of 80 meters, width of 15 meters, , arch height of 25 meters, largest church in pomerania. possessions of abbey rapidly increased, 50 years after foundation abbey s territory reached coast. woods cleared, , numerous villages of hagenhufendorf type set , populated german settlers. in 1325, last prince of rügen died without issue, , neuenkamp rest of principality inherited dukes of pomerania. abbey prospered until secularized in 1535, following protestant reformation , adaoption of lutheranism pomeranian nobility in 1534.

following secularization, new owner, duke bogislaw xiii, rebuilt abbey ducal palace, , turned former abbey s yards town. modeled new town after republic of venice, envisioning town holding population of nobles, craftsmen, merchants , artists, compete neighboring hanseatic stralsund. consequence of these ambitions, granted new town no surrounding land, did not idea of inhabitants doing in agriculture. rather, concentrated weavers in town , had mint built. named town after father-in-law, francis of brunswick-lüneburg. abbey s church torn down in 1561, southernmost extremity left , still stands today. when bogislaw inherited stettin in 1603, lost interest in franzburg ambitions, , town never grew envisioned size , status.


the beginning of thirty years war in duchy of pomerania marked capitulation of franzburg, provided occupation of duchy albrecht von wallenstein s mercenary army. in following, town devastated completely. franzburg lost weaveries , mint. century later, in 1728, franzburg resettled.


however, remained seat of administration of surrounding kreis franzburg(-barth), mainland part of former principality of rügen, until seat moved barth after world war i.


today, franzburg municipality in kreis vorpommern-rügen.
