history
origin

this unit formed in east london in 1876, buffalo corps of rifle volunteers, service in 9th frontier war. disbanded in 1879. (east london situated on buffalo river, hence name).


reformed

the unit re-formed in july 1883 , named after region of kaffraria, 19th-century name region around east london. there had been many other units region, regiment can claim descent:



kaffrarian volunteer corps,
kaffrarian mounted rifles (kaffrarian rangers), *buffalo volunteer rifles corps,
buffalo volunteer engineers,
kaffrarian volunteer artillery corps,
berlin mounted volunteers,
cape mounted yeomanry (1st regiment),
frontier mounted riflemen (brabant s horse),
east london volunteers (von linsignen s buffalo corps , later walkers horse).

on 1 december 1900 george herbert farrar appointed major in kaffrarian rifles.


under union defence force

by 1913 unit embodied in citizen force 5th infantry (kaffrarian rifles), regained old name in 1932. unit temporarily amalgamated first city regiment, first city/the kaffrarian rifles 1954 1956.


conflicts

this regiment , predecessors took part in of south africa s armed conflicts, including:



the bechuanaland campaign (1897),
the second boer war,
world war (when fought in german south-west africa , of members went on serve in east africa , europe),
world war ii (when fought in western desert during 1941 - 1943) in
south africa s border war during 1975 1986 (when fought in south-west africa, angola , zambia).

under sandf post 1994 , peacekeeping

in order keep pace changing political climate in south africa, regiment renamed buffalo volunteer rifles in 1999.


as of 2014 regiment considered integrated , representative army unit. members have been attached united nations operation in burundi and


recently rifle company returned democratic republic of congo after six-month spell of active duty part of monusco.
