theodore clement steele (1847–1926) member of famous hoosier group of american regional impressionist painters included william forsyth, j. ottis adams, richard b. gruelle, , otto stark. born in owen county, indiana, steele began studying art @ age. attended waveland collegiate institute in montgomery county, indiana, , briefly studied painting in chicago , cincinnati before moving indianapolis become portrait painter. steele spent 5 years (1880–85) studying art @ academy of fine arts, munich, before returning indianapolis resume career. although steele made living painting portraits, best known landscapes.


steele elected associate artist national academy of design in new york city in 1913, confirming standing famous hoosier artist of time. steele former president of society of western artists. steele s work has been exhibited across united states. 3 of paintings accepted prestigious panama–pacific international exposition in san francisco, california, in 1915. in 1916 steele awarded honorary doctorate indiana university.
