when war ended in 1945, millions of veterans returned home , reintegrated civilian life. process, congress passed g.i. bill of rights. encouraged home ownership , investment in higher education through distribution veterans of loans @ low or 0 interest rates.


returning veterans married, started families, pursued higher education, , bought first homes. veterans benefits, twenty-somethings found new homes in planned communities on outskirts of american cities. group, formative years covered great depression, generation hardened poverty , deprived of security of home or job. thriving on american dream, life simple, jobs plentiful, , record number of babies born.


many americans believed lack of post-war government spending send united states depression. however, consumer demand fueled economic growth. baby boom triggered housing boom, consumption boom , boom in labor force. between 1950 , 1960, nation s real gdp rose 50%, $2.2 trillion $3.1 trillion (in 2009 dollars). middle class grew , majority of america s labor force held white-collar jobs. increase led urbanization , increased demand ownership of cars , other 1950s , 1960s inventions.
