Political background of Morel and Casement Congo Free State propaganda war



roger casement irish independence fighter hanged on 3 august 1916 treason, sabotage , espionage against british crown on basis of collaboration german empire during wwi. in late 19th , 20th century german east africa in competition congo free state (mainly profits of ivory trade in eastern congo region) , after german invasion of belgium, force publique of belgian congo played major role in allied offensive against german east africa during east african campaign (world war i).


during agadir crisis of 1911, morel entirely in sympathy germany. later, tension grew in run-up world war i, morel again sympathetic germany, disinclined stand belgium under german pressure, , opposed united kingdom , france getting involved in war. on 22 august 1917 morel s house searched , evidence discovered had sent udc pamphlet switzerland, breach of defence of realm act. morel sentenced 6 months imprisonment, served in pentonville prison. in 1922 general election, won second seat, in process defeating 1 of outgoing members – winston churchill. morel regarded churchill warmonger , took pride in having defeated him: upon churchill such personal force evil take fight against him whole heart.
