francophone units

in late 1960s, canadian forces committed creating french language units (flus) , encouraging career opportunities francophones. minister of national defence, léo cadieux, announced creation on april 2, 1968, include artillery , armoured regiments units of supporting arms, 2 battalions of royal 22 régiment @ core. army flus concentrated @ valcartier , became known 5 groupement de combat. french-speaking regular force armoured regiment, 12 régiment blindé du canada, , artillery regiment, 5 régiment d artillerie légère du canada, created, , policy of bilingualism supported first chief of defence staff, general j.v. allard.

total force

at end of cold war , years after, canadian land forces began emphasizing concept of total force in greater integration between regular force , reserve force components achieved. unsuccessful experiments during period included 10/90 battalions intended ten percent regular force , ninety percent reserve force. after few years, these organizations undone.


other successful , lasting changes included reorganizing regional component headquarters larger total force headquarters. in september 1991, 5 regional militia areas reorganized 4 land force areas, , regular force establishments integrated chain of command based on geographic location.
