Unification History of the Canadian Army



the army integrated royal canadian navy , royal canadian air force on february 1, 1968 under policy of unification. newly formed canadian forces first combined command military force in modern world. army became known mobile command. helicopter operations, briefly instituted under army purview in 1960s, transferred air command.


most of pre-unification corps had been created in 20th century disbanded; merged counterparts in navy , air force form personnel branches of cf. move toward unification, other budget , cost-cutting moves during 1980s , 1990s vehemently opposed many , regarded fault in canadian forces. majority of veterans , serving @ time objected initiative; many, including senior officers, leaving military altogether. on 16 august 2011, canadian government restored names of royal canadian navy, canadian army , royal canadian air force existing maritime, land , air commands; although unified command , structure of cf remains.



royal canadian army medical corps , royal canadian dental corps—became canadian forces medical service , canadian forces dental service respectively; in 1990s, both cfms , cfds combined administratively canadian forces health services (though both still wear individual branch insignia)
royal canadian corps of signals—became communications , electronics branch. in 2013 army component of branch regained title royal canadian corps of signals.
royal canadian ordnance corps amalgamated supply , transport services of royal canadian army service corps—became logistics branch
royal canadian electrical , mechanical engineers—became land ordnance engineering, electrical , mechanical engineering branch, corps of royal canadian electrical , mechanical engineers in 2013
clerical trades of royal canadian army service corps, royal canadian army pay corps, , royal canadian postal corps—became administration branch (later merged logistics branch)
canadian provost corps , canadian intelligence corps—became security branch
