u.s. route 101 westernmost federal highway in u.s.a. running north/south through states of california, oregon, , washington, parallels coastline mexico–us border canada–us border. highway 101 links 7 of county s 9 incorporated cities: cloverdale, healdsburg, windsor, santa rosa, rohnert park, cotati, , petaluma. freeway entire length within county, except section south of petaluma.


the four-lane sections of highway have been heavily congested during peak commute hours many years , work being done widen part of highway 6 lanes.the segment north of petaluma (at old redwood highway/petaluma boulevard north exit) windsor has been widened. 2 new inner lanes designated vehicles 2 or more occupants during commute hours. work being done near sonoma/marin county line involve upgrading segment of highway full freeway standards.

within sonoma county, highway 1 follows coastline mendocino county border, @ mouth of gualala river, marin county border, @ estero americano (americano creek), east of bodega bay.

highway 12 runs eastward intersection highway 116 in sebastopol santa rosa. there turns south through valley of moon sonoma, east napa county. four-lane freeway section within santa rosa, between fulton road , farmers lane, called luther burbank memorial highway. section, crosses highway 101, severely congested during peak commute hours.


the two-lane bodega highway runs west intersection of highways 12 , 116 in sebastopol, through coastal hills intersection highway 1, east of bodega bay. east of santa rosa, highway 12 called sonoma highway; , east of sonoma, carneros highway.

highway 37 connects highway 101 @ novato, in marin county, interstate 80 in vallejo, in solano county, @ top of san pablo bay. within sonoma county, called sears point road.

highway 116 winding, two-lane rural route runs jenner, @ mouth of russian river on coast, southeast arnold drive near sonoma. called guerneville highway, between guerneville , forestville; gravenstein highway north, between forestville , sebastopol; , gravenstein highway south, between sebastopol , stony point road, west of rohnert park. east of petaluma lakeville highway, stage gulch road.

railroads

mesa grande train station, 1910


the petaluma , haystack railroad connected city of petaluma ferries of san francisco bay landing @ head of navigation on petaluma river in 1864.


the san francisco , north pacific railroad (sf&np) connected city of santa rosa ferry connections @ donahue landing on petaluma river in 1870. rail service extended north healdsburg in 1871 , cloverdale in 1872. in 1884 railroad extended south alternate ferry connection in tiburon. rail line used sonoma–marin area rail transit.


the 3-foot-gauge north pacific coast railroad extended northward in 1876 ferry connection @ sausalito through valley ford, freestone , occidental monte rio on lower russian river. service extended duncan mills in 1877 , cazadero in 1885. standard gauge fulton , guerneville railroad left sf&np @ fulton reach korbel in 1876 , guerneville in 1877. standard-gauge rails extended down-river duncan mills in 1909 after northwestern pacific railroad merger, , narrow-gauge service discontinued in 1930.


the unique sonoma valley prismoidal railway linked city of sonoma bay ferries in 1876, , replaced in 1879 3-foot (0.91 m)-gauge sonoma valley railroad ferry landing near mouth of petaluma river. service extended sonoma glen ellen in 1882. southern end of line extended westward in 1888 connection sf&np @ ignacio. line converted standard-gauge in 1890 , remains (in 2009) sonoma county s connection national rail system @ schellville.


southern pacific subsidiary santa rosa , carquinez railroad extended eastward in 1888 link santa rosa national rail system.


a sf&np branch line santa rosa brought rail service sebastopol in 1890. petaluma , santa rosa railroad extended interurban service north ferry connection in petaluma reach sebastopol in 1904, santa rosa in 1905, , forestville in 1906.
