zürich during period of territorial expansion , prosperity during late 14th 15th century increased in population estimated 7,000 inhabitants. figure decreased rapidly result of old zürich war, 5,000, comparable population of berne, schaffhausen or lucerne.


population grew steadily during 16th 18th centuries, reaching 10,000 1800. population increased rapidly during 19th century, due industrialization, , increased availability of building space after destruction of city walls in 1830s, reaching 28,000 1888.


counting population within modern city borders, figures 17 200 in 1800, 56,700 in 1871, 150,700 in 1900, , 251,000 in 1930. population grew rapidly during 1945–1965, peaking @ 440,000. after 1965, population declined due suburbanization, below 360,000 in 1990s.


after 2000, there has again been population growth, surpassing 400,000 mark in 2014.
