History Woodhaven Junction (LIRR station)

the station first opened lirr in 1880s rockaway beach branch (then known new york, woodhaven , rockaway railroad), , in 1893 atlantic branch. beginning in may 1940, both stations rebuilt when atlantic branch grade separated , placed in underground tunnel. elevated rockaway beach station opened in september 1941, while underground atlantic branch station opened service on december 28, 1942.


the elevated station, located on trestle adjacent 100th street, built 2 concrete high-level side platforms, staircases down street , atlantic branch on either side of atlantic avenue. underground station s design resembled independent subway station, tile work of same design; name mosaic reads woodhaven. south of elevated station two-track wye, curving northwest rockaway branch merge atlantic branch west of station @ 96th street.


in expansion plans of city s independent subway system in 1930s, rockaway beach branch planned absorbed new subway, have turned woodhaven elevated station stop on ind queens boulevard line or new queens crosstown line. in 1950, rockaway beach branch south of howard beach station had closed after trestle on jamaica bay between raunt , broad channel stations destroyed fire. city purchased entire line in 1955, portion south of liberty avenue reactivated subway service. ridership declined on remaining portion of lirr rockaway beach branch, , fewer trains scheduled stop @ woodhaven on atlantic branch. passengers use station had ride buses next nearest stations. elevated station of rockaway beach branch closed first on june 8, 1962, along rest of rockaway beach branch. underground station of atlantic branch closed in 1976.


woodhaven junction 1 of 2 stations on abandoned rockaway beach branch still standing (the other being ozone park), while underground atlantic branch station still visible passing trains. now-abandoned lirr substation present on south side of atlantic avenue west of elevated line. northern staircases elevated station still visible. former track junction , part of rockaway branch right-of-way south 97th avenue has been paved on , used school bus depot logan bus company; ramp , tunnel portal of wye have been filled in.
