the vermont air national guard origins date formation of 134th fighter squadron @ burlington international airport, receiving federal recognition on 14 august 1946. equipped f-47d thunderbolts. , mission air defense of state. assigned directly vermont air national guard until massachusetts ang 67th fighter wing, federally recognized on 15 october 1946. 67th fighter wing first ang command , control organization in new england. on 4 april 1947, transferred maine ang 101st fighter group.


during korean war, 134th federalized on 10 february 1951 , assigned federalized maine ang 101st fighter-interceptor wing, although remained stationed @ burlington airport. mission expanded include air defense of new england. squadron attached air defense command 23d fighter-interceptor wing @ presque isle afb, maine on 1 april 1951 no change of mission. reassigned 4711th defense wing on 6 february 1952 @ presque isle afb. released active duty , returned control of state of vermont on 1 november 1952. on 1 may 1956 134th authorized expand group level, , 158th fighter group (air defense) established national guard bureau; 134th fis becoming group s flying squadron.


circa 1992, in line air force-wide redesignation, wing became 158th fighter wing. today vermont air national guard provides air defense part of united states northern command (usnorthcom) / north american aerospace defense command (norad) in time of war or national emergency defense of north american continent. 1989 1997 wing had aircraft on 5-minute alert, 7 days week, 24 hours day.


after september 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks on united states, elements of every air national guard unit in vermont has been activated in support of global war on terrorism. flight crews, aircraft maintenance personnel, communications technicians, air controllers , air security personnel engaged in operation noble eagle air defense overflights of major united states cities. also, vermont ang units have been deployed overseas part of operation enduring freedom in afghanistan , operation iraqi freedom in iraq other locations directed.


in february 2014 usaf announced first air force air national guard unit fly new f-35 lightning ii 158th fighter wing of vermont air national guard based @ burlington air guard station. 158th flies f-16 falcon, nearing end of useful service lives.


burlington air guard station expected receive 18 f-35as, replacing 18 f-16 fighting falcons assigned 158th fighter wing. f-35a expected arrive in 2020.
