in mid-1940s, northern end of us 9 realigned enter canada via champlain instead of rouses point. old route through rouses point became ny 9b. in mid-1960s, adirondack northway completed in vicinity of champlain, supplanting northernmost 1 mile (1.6 km) of us 9. us 9 overlapped i-87 exit 43 canadian border; however, truncated end @ exit 43—the last interchange before border—in 1970s. part of us 9 s former routing border retained service road , designated ny 971b, unsigned reference route.
