Early life Luna (killer whale)







luna born population known southern resident killer whale community. population, consisted of approximately 80 killer whales @ time of luna s birth, has been extensively studied since 1970s. scientists have learned recognize each individual in population photo-identification, , can track individual movements , social relationships year after year. known luna born group known l2 matriline, consisted of matriarch, grace (l2), luna s uncle, orcan (l39), gaia (l78), wavewalker (l88), , luna s mother, splash (l67). l2 matriline belongs larger group called l-pod. southern resident killer whales of both sexes form extremely stable family bonds , remain mothers throughout lives.


luna first spotted on morning of september 19, 1999, near san juan islands of washington, newborn alone mother. first person see him operator of whale watching business, noticed behaviour of pair unusual. killer whale mothers surrounded other members of pod when give birth, , inseparable infants swim closely sides. luna , mother in proximity appeared relatively disassociated each other, , there no other whales nearby. later day, luna seen leaving mother follow whales k pod , did not reconnect 2 or 3 days. kiska (k18), 1 of whales in k pod, had given birth stillborn calf , may have been lactating when encountered luna.


southern resident killer whales spend summers near coast of british columbia, canada , washington, leave area each fall, , return in spring. not known spend winter. temporary separation of splash , luna unusual amongst killer whales led speculation whether splash indeed luna s mother, reappeared near san juan islands in spring of 2000 , appeared have normal mother-calf relationship throughout summer. on september 23, luna seen leaving area rest of relatives, , beside uncle, orcan.


luna given name l98 @ birth according scientific naming conventions resident killer whales. seattle newspaper held naming contest in 2000 resulted in l98 being given common name luna, latin moon. @ time, not known if luna male or female. contest winner, 8-year-old girl bellingham, explained, orca whale explores ocean moon explores earth , why his/her name luna.
