on 15 july 1979, following overthrow of kr, new government passed decree law no, 1 . allowed trial of pol pot , ieng sary crime of genocide. given american defence lawyer, hope stevens. tried in absentia , convicted of genocide.


in january 2001, cambodian national assembly passed legislation form tribunal try members of kr regime. such tribunal constituted extraordinary chambers in courts of cambodia.


the tribunal has been criticized being slow, 3 people have been convicted. among others tried tribunal, died during trial, , fifth found unfit stand trial.


kang kek iew

kang kek iew, known comrade duch or hang ping, mid level leader of kr regime. set first khmer prison (code name m-13) in kampong forest, prisoners had live in pits. set prison 2 years later, known m-99. estimated 20,000 people tortured , executed there.


following khmer rouge victory in april 1975, prison system extended nationwide, , in phnom penh infamous tuol sleng prison (s-21 prison) founded. duch in charge of prison, lieutenants mam nai , tang sin hean, led torture , interrogation of prisoners. estimated 16,000 people killed within tuol sleng compound 7 known survivors.


in 1999, duch interviewed nic dunlop , nate thayer, in admitted guilt on crimes carried out in tuol sleng. expressed sorrow actions , stated willing stand trial, , give evidence against former comrades. on 16 february 2009 trial began, , accepted responsible crimes carried out @ tuol sleng, on 31 march 2009. on 26 july 2010 found guilty on charges of crimes against humanity, torture , murder , given sentence of 35 years imprisonment. on 3 february 2012 previous sentence replaced life imprisonment.


nuon chea

on 19 september 2007, nuon chea, known brother number two, arrested, , later arraigned before eccc. @ end of trial in 2013 denied charges, stating had not given orders mistreat or kill people deprive them of food or commit genocide . convicted in 2014 , sentenced life imprisonment. has expressed remorse , accepted moral responsibility crimes, stating sincerely apologize public, victims, families, , cambodian people.


ieng sary

ieng sary arrested on 17 november 2007 , charged crimes against humanity. died of heart failure in 2013 before trial reach verdict.


ieng thirith

ieng thirith arrested on 12 november 2007 @ same time husband, ieng sary. indicted on 10 september 2010, crimes against humanity , genocide. on 17 november 2011, following evaluations medical experts, found unfit stand trial due mental condition.


khieu samphan

khieu samphan arrested on 19 november 2007 , charged crimes against humanity. convicted in 2014 , sentenced life imprisonment.
