an association football club formed @ st bartholomew’s hospital medical college in 1879, initiative coming in response start of inter-hospital competitions.


until 1892 various athletic clubs separately maintained members of individual clubs, in 1892 decided fixed subscription should paid students, , should collected , administered school authorities. entrance fee of 5 guineas entitled students life membership of abernethian society, athletic, boxing, boating, cricket, lawn tennis, rugby, swimming , association football clubs led acquisition of sports ground college committee @ winchmore hill £8,000 , pavilion erected , suitable pitches , tennis courts laid out. ground taken on amalgated clubs in 1895. prior acquisition of sports ground @ winchmore hill, club played home games @ spotted dog ground @ upton lane.


around 1935, students expressed wish college provide them larger playing fields in use @ winchmore hill, these no longer adequate meet needs of large number of students @ college. proposed, therefore, attempt made find new ground, large enough cater student’s sporting requirements, , in 1937 college purchased new site @ foxbury, chislehurst in kent (now south london).


the new sports ground in chislehurst bought take account increased popularity of sport part of wider fitness craze , growth of sporting societies @ st bartholomew’s. money borrowed build pavilion , student union charged higher rent. in june 1938 pavilion completed, , after grounds had been leveled , returfed, 3 rugby pitches, , football , hockey pitch opened. local residents invited opening ceremony in effort ‘foster association’ hope of securing donations. other sports facilities followed.


the successes of association football club in united hospitals challenge cup, london senior cup , fa cup attracted national attention , raised profile of college; notable results include reaching final of london senior cup in 1890-91 season, beating millwall in semi-final, beaten 6-0 royal arsenal @ oval, predecessors of modern day arsenal fc , reaching 2nd round of fa cup in 1881/82 season after eliminating 5 times winners wanderers fc in 1st round, albeit via walkover.


the site of medical college of st bartholomew s @ charterhouse square can claim birthplace of association football , charterhouse football regarded major influence in development of global game. students @ charterhouse played football within cloisters of old carthusian monastery , space limited players depended on dribbling skills. significantly, members of football club @ charterhouse school @ charterhouse square site attended original meeting of football association in 1863 when decided group of interested teams limit handling , hacking , develop art of football , st bartholomew s hospital amongst first opponents, visiting them 1856.

the teams royal london hospital , st bartholomew s hospital merged in 1995 following union of st bartholomew s hospital medical college , london hospital medical college queen mary , westfield college, known queen mary, university of london form st bartholomew s , royal london school of medicine , dentistry. likewise, st bartholomew s , royal london hospitals fc formed , have since played @ previous ground of st bartholomew s hospital medical college, chislehurst following forced sale of previous ground of london hospital medical college @ hale end queen mary.
