worthing junior-senior high school built in 1958, , opened on january 27, 1958. students zoned worthing attended miller junior high school , yates high school. school named after evan edward worthing, houston real-estate developer set scholarship trust african-american hisd students. native of michigan, earned mechanical engineering degree texas a&m university, captain of american football team. stated african-americans should inherit wealth; led opening of worthing. school covered grades 7 through 12. worthing located @ 4330 bellfort boulevard; first building became overcrowded new high school campus opened. worthing moved 9215 scott street @ reed road, , attucks middle school opened @ former location.


as part of 2014-2015 rezoning, residents of south park located west of martin luther king boulevard rezoned jones high school worthing. john modest, principal, stated expected receive 200 new students.


in 2013-2014 school year worthing had 640 students, in 2014-2015 had 685 students, , of 2016 had 680 students.


consolidation proposal

in november 2008 houston isd proposed rebuild carnegie vanguard high school on site adjacent worthing, rebuild worthing, , have 2 schools share same cafeteria , other facilities. school board member larry marshall, jurisdiction @ time included carnegie , worthing, expressed support proposal or otherwise house carnegie , worthing on same plot of land.


parents @ worthing accepted proposal while parents @ carnegie rejected , asked discontinued. carnegie parents said higher violence levels @ worthing , parents fears of backlash against carnegie students @ worthing cause them opposed hisd s proposal. peter brown, houston city council at-large position 1, opposed idea. brown said renovation of worthing less costly consolidation. brown cited gates foundation study support point.


on december 4, 2008 abelardo saavedra, hisd superintendent, said shelve plans since had insufficient support board of trustees. school board trustee paula m. harris expressed support consolidation plan, arguing magnet schools , small neighborhood schools, many of closed district, should treated in same manner. margaret downing of houston press added worthing parents did not how controversy denigrated school.

on wednesday march 21, 2012, school s renovation , expansion groundbreaking ceremony held. $805 million bond referendum, approved in elections in 2007, fund renovation , expansion. @ ceremony, licia green ellis, wife of texas senate member rodney ellis, gave $10,000 donation school. several design changes , controversies construction had delayed establishment of wing. part of 2007 bond program, , of january 2015 1 of few projects bond still not completed. stafford, texas-based fort bend mechanical supposed build worthing wing got legal dispute hisd. gil ramirez, contractor, accused owner of fort bend mechanical, david pete medford, of giving super bowl tickets , $25,000 hisd trustee larry marshall in order construction contract hisd; ramirez sued hisd , trustee larry walker. in addition, city of houston department of public works , engineering approved 1 set of building plans, architectural firm, molina walker, used different set of plans never approved city government contractors building school.
