history

bronze age
the first fortified settlement found archaeologists large canaanite port city middle bronze age iib (1800-1550 bce). massive ramparts, 4.5 m (15 ft) high, protected city proper , large area of port facilities. north , south city extended 2 nearby rivers, canaanite engineers connected fosse, transforming achzib island. substantial destruction level beginning of late bronze age proves these fortifications not sufficient.

middle ages
crusader period
during crusader period, site known casale umberti, or casal humberti, after hubert of pacy held casale , documented in 1108. european farmers settled there in 1153 under baldwin iii. in 1232 site of battle of casal imbert between german , french crusaders part of war of lombards.
mamluk period

british mandate
