history

bronze age

the first fortified settlement found archaeologists large canaanite port city middle bronze age iib (1800-1550 bce). massive ramparts, 4.5 m (15 ft) high, protected city proper , large area of port facilities. north , south city extended 2 nearby rivers, canaanite engineers connected fosse, transforming achzib island. substantial destruction level beginning of late bronze age proves these fortifications not sufficient.


iron age

according hebrew bible, area including phoenician city of achzib assigned tribe of asher, asherites did not manage conquer phoenicians:

roman , byzantine periods

a maritime city named cziv, 9 miles (14 km) north of acre, mentioned josephus flavius , later eusebius. achziv (cheziv) mentioned in jewish rabbinic writings, example midrash vayikra rabba 37:4. additionally, achziv mentioned in babylonian talmud, , relating middle age commentators, concerning location of achziv in regards historical borders of israel.


middle ages
crusader period

during crusader period, site known casale umberti, or casal humberti, after hubert of pacy held casale , documented in 1108. european farmers settled there in 1153 under baldwin iii. in 1232 site of battle of casal imbert between german , french crusaders part of war of lombards.


mamluk period

the arab village of az-zeeb established during mamluk period, houses erected using stones of crusader castle.


ottoman period

the town existed during ottoman rule in region.


british mandate

in 1946, jewish resistance movement attempted blow railroad bridge on creek @ achziv in operation known night of bridges. monument 14 soldiers killed there erected on site. during 1948 arab–israeli war arab villagers of az-zib fled lebanon.


israel

achziv @ sunset


achziv became israeli national park.
