for millennia, land known kansas inhabited native americans. in 1803, of modern kansas secured united states part of louisiana purchase. in 1854, kansas territory organized, in 1861 kansas became 34th u.s. state. in 1872, harvey county founded.
in 1871, atchison, topeka , santa fe railway extended main line emporia westward newton july 1871. town became important railroad shipping point of texas cattle.
the city founded in 1871 , named after newton, massachusetts, home of of santa fe stockholders.
in august 1871, there gunfight @ hide park, in total of 8 men killed. incident began argument between 2 local lawmen, billy bailey , mike mccluskie. because of incident, newton became known bloody , lawless—the wickedest city in west. .
in 1872, western terminal atchison, topeka , santa fe railway , railhead chisholm trail established here. shortly after incorporation of city in 1872, newton city council passed ordinance prohibiting running @ large of buffalo , other wild animals.
