the beginning of boca de yuma

the first families settled village of boca de yuma came various regions of spanish colonial captaincy general of santo domingo on hispaniola. perhaps 1 of first persons settle here pedro sifuentes, nicknamed portugalete. has been referred dominican robinson crusoe due many years of living alone here after sinking of ship in adjacent yuma bay.

boca de yuma had spanish colonial fort overlooking yuma bay. fort held highly defensible position, cannons main defense.

the remains of cannon on coastline, believed same archbishop fernando navarrete asked king of spain for, defense , protection of shrine of our lady of la altagracia in higüey. in 1877 expedition organized baecista of curaçao found cannons left underwater in yuma bay. placed monuments on ocean cliff community park , historic lighthouse located. other guns , battleships remain on playa blanca (white beach).

one of great pirates of times, defended poor, man named roberto cofresi ramirez de arellano, born in coastal town of red cape. deep below river mouth there cave, according tradition pirate ship cofresi sank. in 1824, roberto cofresí engaged u.s. commander in fierce battle, after cofresí , crew captured. death sentence took place on morning of march 29, 1825, on fields of castillo san felipe del morro in old san juan, puerto rico.
