mobile command took part in several international missions following fall of communism in eastern europe. aside playing minor part in gulf war in 1991, canadian forces heavily committed several un , nato missions in former yugoslavia tested shrinking military s abilities , resources.


women in army

the canadian women s army corps created in second world war separate corps of army, , remained until 1960s when women integrated canadian forces. women restricted trades, though 1990s accepted trades. captain nichola goddard first female combat soldier killed when died in battle in afghanistan in 2006.


the first lady cadets graduated royal military college of canada in 1980s.


special operations forces

joint task force 2 created in wake of decision move counter-terrorism duties rcmp canadian forces.


in 1995, canadian airborne regiment disbanded after somalia affair. in 2006, new canadian special operations regiment created part of major reorganization of cf chief of defence staff general rick hillier.


somalia

aside disbandment of canada s airborne regiment (which did not end parachute capability in cf, qualified jumpers reorganized jump companies of 3 remaining regular force regiments), somalia had other institutional effects on military. chief among these sensitivity training such lda (leadership in diverse army) , sharp (standard harassment , racism prevention) became mandatory members of canadian forces. training reaction so-called hazing videos of members of airborne came light after murder in somalia.


the army in evolving society

a number of other decisions unrelated somalia reflected changing social values in canadian society , army during 1990s. women in highland regiments permitted wear kilt beginning in 1990s; form of dress traditionally gender related. aboriginals permitted regulation grow long hair in traditional braids, , turban accepted form of headdress sikhs.

in 1995, special commission on restructuring of reserves commissioned.


in 1998, mobile command renamed land force command.


on 15 august 2011, land force command renamed canadian army.

canada participated in 2001 invasion of afghanistan during time emergency equipment purchases made, including world class artillery , armoured nyala patrol vehicles, replacing aging howitzers , iltis utility cars.


leadership

the commander of canadian army institutional head of canadian army. post entitled general officer commanding forces (canada) 1875 1904 when withdrawal of british forces canada took place. called chief of general staff 1904 until 1964 when position abolished unification of canada s military forces. appointment entitled commander of mobile command 1965–1993 , chief of land staff 1993–2011. in 2011 land force command renamed canadian army @ time appointment renamed present incarnation.

mk v tank – used training in england in 1918. shortly after war ended, tanks returned british.
carden loyd tankette – 12 used canadian armoured fighting vehicle school in training role 1931.
vickers vib light tank – 12 used canadian armoured fighting vehicle school in training role 1938,
m1917 – 236–250 american built copies of french renault ft distributed between camp borden, fort garry horse , other units in 1940 training use.
renault ft – may have been used 1940 training, possible identity confusion m1917
m3 lee – unspecified number used training in canada. important role in canada in serving basis ram.
ram cruiser – first indigenous tank design; based on lee. began replacing other tanks in canada , used canadian armoured units in uk training. in 1943, british , commonwealth decided use single cruiser tank – sherman. ram provided excellent training, never used in combat.
valentine infantry tank – british design built under licence. small number of mark vis, viis, , xis retained in canada training 1941–43, bulk of canadian production being supplied soviet union.
churchill – 60 mark equipped calgary regiment , used during dieppe raid in august 1942.
grizzly – 188 of canadian-built version of sherman cruiser tank supplied in 1943–1944. these used in training roles. production ceased in favour of american production allow montreal locomotive focus on other military vehicles such sexton self-propelled gun.
sherman – primary tank of army in second world war. entered service in 1944 , in several variants , served through korean war , in militia until 1970s. variants included mark i, dd, , firefly mk. vc
centurion – british design replaced sherman canada s main battle tank , served through cold war in mk.5 , mk.11 variants.
leopard 1 – 127 copies of canadianized leopard c1 variant of leopard 1a3 replaced centurion in 1978, 114 later upgraded leopard c2 standard in 2000.
leopard 2a6m can – latest canadian tank in current use.
