more 5,000 works donated picasso’s family after death in 1973 under law permitting heirs contribute art in lieu of tax payments. more donations came estate of picasso’s last wife, jacqueline roque, , anne sinclair, museum board member. since 1985 more 1,000 exhibits have been bought museum.


in period of economic crisis , government cutbacks on funding culture, longtime director anne baldassari still managed raise $41 million makeover exporting artworks exhibition abroad. musée picasso raised between €1 million , €3.5 million year between 2008 , 2011 touring exhibition masterpieces picasso museum . tour helped fund refurbishment of museum , included de young museum, san francisco, attendance topped 335,000, chinese pavilion, shanghai, art gallery of new south wales, sydney, art gallery of ontario, toronto, , palazzo reale, milan. upon re-opening, museum expected finance more 60 percent of annual budget.


governance

in 2014, baldassari dismissed aurélie filippetti, french minister of culture, after mounting criticism of management. new director laurent le bon reopened museum in september 2014 following €52 million five-year renovation dogged delays , escalating costs.


expansion

by end of ongoing construction work, museum’s public space triple, around 58,000 square feet, moving staff offices newly purchased building. expansion project, budget doubled $70 million, supposed completed in 2 years when began in 2009. grew in scope , size, reopening dates announced , delayed several times.


after five-year closure museum reopened on 25 october 2014.
