the tu-144d, of 5 produced (plus 1 uncompleted), powered kolesov rd-36-51 turbojet sfc of 1.22 kg/kgp hr. range full payload increased 5330 km compared 6,470 km concorde. plans aircraft range in excess of 7,000 km (4,300 mi; 3,800 nmi) range never implemented.


the engine intakes had variable ramps , bypass flaps positions controlled automatically suit engine airflow. long prevent surging. twice long on concorde. jean rech (sud aviation) states need excessive length based on misconception length required attenuate inlet distortion. intakes shortened 10 feet on projected tu-144m.


the kolesov rd-36-51 had unusual variable con-di nozzle nozzle pressure ratios @ supersonic speeds. without afterburner there no variable nozzle available. translating plug nozzle used.
