tornadoes caused major damage in kansas. in chapman, 1 person killed , 3 others critically injured after ef3 tornado struck town. 80 percent of chapman suffered serious damage, minor damage occurring downtown area. 70 homes in chapman destroyed 215 receiving damage. 2 churches demolished , town s elementary, middle , high schools severely damaged. manhattan heavily impacted tornado rated ef4 on enhanced fujita scale. forty-five residences in manhattan destroyed, 2 mobile homes , 3 businesses. additional 67 residences, 3 multi-family homes, 1 mobile home , 10 businesses suffered significant damage. also, 75 single-family residences, 3 multi-family structures , 20 businesses sustained minor damage, , 637 residences, 93 multi-family structures, 20 mobile homes , 10 businesses partially affected. elementary school heavily damaged in manhattan. there damage kansas state university, wind erosion lab damaged. suffering severe damage engineering complex, sigma alpha epsilon fraternity house, waters, call , cardwell halls ward hall, houses university s nuclear reactor. 1 person killed near town of soldier in jackson county ef2 tornado. 32 homes damaged in jackson county. southern outskirts of salina near junction of interstate 135 hard hit ef3 tornado. several homes, outbuildings, trees , power lines damaged in area.
