History Geary County, Kansas



for many millennia, great plains of north america inhabited nomadic native americans. 16th century 18th century, kingdom of france claimed ownership of large parts of north america. in 1762, after french , indian war, france secretly ceded new france spain, per treaty of fontainebleau.


19th century

in 1802, spain returned of land france, keeping title 7,500 square miles. in 1803, of land modern day kansas acquired united states france part of 828,000 square mile louisiana purchase 2.83 cents per acre.


in 1854, kansas territory organized, in 1861 kansas became 34th u.s. state. geary county formed on august 30, 1855 original county open, free territory. among first 33 counties established territory government.


geary county named davis county in 1855 after jefferson davis. in 1862 , 1864 after davis became president of confederacy, attempts made change county s name, both failed. federal census records show davis county 1860 through 1880, in addition 1885 kansas state census. in 1888 county renamed in honor of john w. geary, governor of kansas territory.
