parish in hundred of malmesbury, county wilts, 1½ mile e. of tetbury, in gloucestershire, , 4 miles n.w. of malmesbury. called saxons newantune, , had right of common granted king athelstane. parish bounded on w. branch of river avon. village, small, , wholly agricultural, situated on road gloucester portsmouth. tithes have been commuted rent-charge of £365, glebe of 23 acres. living rectory* in diocese of gloucester , bristol, value £370. church, dedicated holy trinity, modern structure, except tower, rebuilt @ expense of landholders. peal of bells has been increased six. there village school, supported subscription. right hon. thomas h. s. sotheron estcourt, m. p., lord of manor.

during first world war, raf long newnton built on farm, raf base consisted of aerial gunnery range, , used storage of ammunition , bombs. when war finished great efforts made remove bombs , ammunition site safety. in 1939 raf long newnton made decoy airfield, part of planning world war 2 involved strategic lighting fool germans yet allow raf fighters avoid landing there. in 1940 site became training school part of raf , relief landing ground. 1947 raf base unused , land bought privately agricultural purposes. 3 solar farms sit in place remains of raf base have survived , these have become magnet interested in history. historically village known long newnton . fosse way forms part of parish boundary , country boundary wiltshire. long newnton 1 of several parishes transferred wiltshire gloucestershire in 1930
