The Pacific Patrol Boat Project (PPBP) Australia's security relationship with the South Pacific



the pacific patrol boat project said cornerstones of australia s strategic influence in region (bergin 2011:1). project commenced in 1985 , twenty-two pacific class patrol boats have been donated twelve recipient countries (bateman & bergin 2008: 62). through ppbp, australia provides financial, technical, logistics, maintenance, training , other support 19 patrol boats across 11 pacific island countries (not including 3 boats given fiji). defence s support underpinned 25 royal australian navy maritime surveillance , technical advisers located across pacific’ (australian government department of defence 2011: 247).


the ppbp, supported other measures designed assist in development of maritime security capacity, has been feature of department of defence s cooperation in south pacific. australia s aim through these projects assists neighbours develop capacity protect maritime resources , enforce sovereignty (australian department of defence 2009: 98). in 2010–11, last patrol boat commenced refit part of defence-sponsored life extension program extends life of boats 15 30 years. program provides deep level maintenance take vessels through end of service life (australian department of defence 2011: 247).
