on morning of 8 june, i-24 , i-21 briefly bombarded sydney , newcastle. after midnight, i-24 surfaced 9 mi (14 km) south-south-east of macquarie lighthouse. submarine s commander ordered gun crew target sydney harbour bridge. fired 10 shells on four-minute period; 9 landed in eastern suburbs , 1 landed in water. i-24 crash dived prevent successful retaliation coastal artillery batteries. 1 shell detonated, , injuries inflicted cuts , fractures falling bricks or broken glass when unexploded shells hit buildings. united states army air forces pilot, 1st lieutenant george cantello, based @ bankstown airport ordered air retaliate, killed when engine failure caused airacobra crash in paddock @ hammondville. in 1988, following efforts residents , consulate in sydney, city of bankstown established memorial park in honour.
