in july 1942 howard-jones submitted 11 drawings war artists advisory committee (waac), not purchased , indeed censored duration of conflict. submitted further drawings in november 1942 , july 1943 purchased , led commission produce paintings of fortifications on islands of flat holm , steep holm in bristol channel. howard-jones painted scenes showing preparations d-day taking place around penarth , cardiff docks. in waac accepted fifteen paintings, including portrait of brother, reme brigadier, fulfill commission. these paintings held imperial war museum , national army museum.
